Process Water Treatment for the Pulp, Paper and Wood Industry
Meet BAT requirements and reduce COD, particles and colour in process water and effluent, with membrane-free, almost chemical-free technology.
Challenges in the pulp, paper and wood industry
Large water volumes and sector-specific BAT conclusions place high demands on water treatment. Typical challenges we help with:
- High organic load (COD/BOD) and fibre residues in process water
- Suspended solids (SS), colour and persistent organic substances
- BAT-AEL levels in the BAT conclusions for the pulp and paper industry
- The wish to reuse water and reduce freshwater consumption
Our solution
Electrocoagulation (EC) removes particles, colloids and organic matter. Electro-oxidation (EO) breaks down persistent organic compounds and colour, and activated carbon provides final polishing. The process is membrane-free and almost chemical-free, and capacity scales from 100 litres per hour upwards.
1. Analysis and testing
We map the water streams at your site and the BAT requirements that apply to you, and test treatment performance on your own water.
2. Tailored plant
We design a solution for compliant discharge and, where possible, reuse as technical water.
3. Delivery and follow-up
We deliver, commission and follow up the plant for stable operation and documented BAT performance.
Results from our tests
With electrocoagulation, we have measured the following reductions in different types of wastewater:
98 %
Suspended solids (SS)
79 %
COD
99 %
Phosphorus
98 %
Heavy metals
Up-to values. Results vary with water composition, so we always test on your own water before recommending a solution.

Frequently asked questions
Which BAT requirements apply to the paper industry?
The pulp and paper industry has its own BAT conclusions under the EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), with BAT-AEL levels for parameters such as COD, suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus. The specific limits are set in each site’s permit.
Can we reuse treated water in the process?
Often yes. Depending on water composition and process requirements, treated water can be reused as technical water, reducing both costs and environmental impact.
Do you also work with sawmills and other wood industries?
Yes. We are happy to discuss any type of water stream in the wood industry.
